Let me start off saying that I felt a boost of confidence this week. I didn't here anything special. I didn't see anything special. I just felt that things can get better in this class. It's not over and it's not too late. I just have to bust my butt for the next 6 weeks for this to become an success.

Outside the workplace, HIV discloser is voluntarily disclosed according to the consent of the individual. That includes inside the workplace also.
HIV testing can not be an requirement for employement.
HIV testing should not be required for insurance purposes.
Annymous HIV testing can be done in the workplace as long as it is for scientic research. Emplyees must be notified.

That is interesting. I never thought about HIV testing being required for insurance. It would make sense that, for example, a life insurance company would not want to provide insurance to someone with HIV/AIDS but it wouldn't be fair.
ReplyDeleteI used to have that same misconception about the HIV drugs. Actually, I met a couple of guys who had HIV and they told me it was no big deal, everything was going to be normal for a very long time with their medicine. I think they had been very recently diagnosed and I wonder what they would tell me now. I know that the medicine can give you really bad nausea and other stomach problems as well as being extremely expensive.
Its great to know that Jamaica has laws enforcing confidentiality. I was shocked to learn that the country I researched ( Dominican Republic) not only does not have any laws for this but goes the extra mile in abusing woman who are tested HIV positive because it is a requirement for employment.
ReplyDeleteI have been doing my did you know so far on medications associated with HIV, if you want to check my blog out you can see just how expensive that they can become. I am not exactly sure what the ILO is in relation to Jamaica's HIV policies...anywhere that I can find that out? Their policy with employment follows Japan's laws, which I also found about about this week. Talk about denying preexisting conditions...

ReplyDeleteThat is a positive that Jamaica is keeping the confidentitality in the workplace based on the voluntary request of the employee. I would hope it wouldn't be any other way.
In order to obtain health insurance, you have to be tested for HIV? That's like a trap! I would hope that many places wouldn't bar you from insurance because of your status. Those are the people who need it the most!
I have been hearing that a lot as well, that drugs can keep you safe if you contract HIV. I don't understand why anyone would take a risk only to have to pay for it greatly afterward. These medicines are very expensive and they don't guarantee that you will live the life you had before contracting HIV. Why take the chance? right?
ReplyDeleteI also never thought about being testing for HIV to get an insurance policy. I wonder how that process works. Would the insurance company only provide some coverage if you were HIV positive or not coverage at all?
ReplyDeleteInteresting that they can test in the workplace for scientific research. I'll bet that helps them keep track of the expanding epidemic within their country. You can't test in the US for employment either. However you can test for insurance purposes.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if the people who aren't worried about catching HIV because of the medications are really thinking about the consequences. Once a person is infected, their lives may never be entirely normal. The medications are expensive and come with side effects, their lives are going to be pretty much focused on staying alive.
ReplyDeleteI am happy that Jamaica enforces HIV onfidentiality in the workplace. It will allow the workers to feel respected. Also, testing for research purposes will allow the Jamaica government to keep a record on the number of individuals who tested positive for HIV
