My first blog

OK, before I get started on this whole blogging thing, I just want to let you know that I'm nervous about this. I've never really cared much to share my thoughts about things that don't matter to me, let alone, share on the Internet. I'm pretty much a blunt person and it don't take much for me learn a lesson or get my point across. I value common sense. One thing I have noticed with people, though, is common sense isn't really that common. I feel that people are always trying to be seen and heard and I've been in enough group conferences and group meetings to know that everyone repeats each other. If you have new information to bring to the table, or can bring it in a different way, then maybe you can be a great blogger or column writer. I'm usually not impressed.

Like I said, I'm new to this. I've read a few bloggs here and there to prepare for this assignment but if anyone have any suggestions to help make me better or my blogging better, please don't hesitate to add in your two cents. :) Even though this will be a challenge for me to write all my thoughts, I don't want to just completely suck at this.

Well, this is week 1 of my blogging. In all my bloggs, I will be truthful and honest and hope I don't get punished for it. I will be myself. My teacher will sometimes give us topics to blogg about but this week is pretty much up to me to speak about the class thus far.

Is UCF sure this class is only 3 credits? After 4 years of college, I can concretely conclude that writing is NOT one of my favorite pastimes, and this class seem to possess all 4 years into 12 weeks. I have a 5 page assignment due every week, answer a question of the week and reply to others, blogg about my thoughts every week and also reply to 3 other bloggs, about 3 book reports to do, and another 5 page summary page for my bloggs is just to name a few. I didn't even hit on the modules and other extra credit assignments and projects. Whew. I've never been the one to back out of a educational challenge, even when I should have. ( I have the grades to prove it. Sad, but true.)

Anyway, this week to me will be and has been the hardest until I get into the routine of things. This class don't really seem too hard, it's just a lot to have on your mind at once. Well, I'm about done. I don't know how I did for my first blogg (I like spelling it like that. Is that points off?), but I have 11 more to improve on. Blogg at you later! :)

*Oh, and I'm going to find a way for my page to appear more interesting.*

  1. For someone that is not use to blogging, I have to say I was very impressed. I agree that sometimes it is brutal reading other people writing or blogs because it always appears to be the same information or statements just rewarded differently. I have been asked to blog in many of my classes and I am starting to get use to it. My word of advice is do not hold back. This is YOUR time to tell YOUR thoughts. If people do not like what you have to say then oh well. They can sign out. Blogging can be almost like theropy. Have fun with it.
Also, I agree that this class should be more than 3 credit hours. Never in my 4 years have a had a class so demanding. I am taking 19 credit hours this semester to graduate, and this one class is almost the same work load as my other classes combined. I am also warming up to this class and am excited to see how this semester will turn out! Good Luck!

  2. Have you ever heard of the writing technique where you just begin to write and eventually zone out which leaads to an honest and almost subconscious effort? I almost view blogging as such. I am typically a very soft spoke, reserved person but at times I find that I can ramble on and on when just faced with filling in a text box. I would be that over the course of the semester you will be glad that you took a class such as this because your writing skill should increase ten fold. I would think that writing is the same as any other skill, the more you practice it the better you eventually become (or you would hope). I might be extremely lost...but what is the five page paper that is due every week outside of the modules? I think this class will prove to be daunting, but very rewarding at the end of it. You have the support of your blogging bretheren and I am sure if you need assistence there is someone that would be willing to assist. Best of luck!

  3. I don't penalize students who are blunt, Jamie. It is actually refreshing as you tend to see students repeat what they think you want to hear. I did give a blog assignment for the first blog. I wanted students to find some aspect of HIV that interested them, like HIV in prison and blog about it along with what you have just said.

Writing is a lost art in this instant society. I'll just bet if I asked students to write a letter to the President they wouldn't know where to start. However if I said to text him a message they could be all over it. The unfortunate part is that people still need to know how to write. You have students who wish to become doctors who will write orders that could keep a patient alive or kill them. It is all in the writing. You have students who want to become teachers and yet if they stand before a class and can't write a correct English sentence how can they expect to teach. Nix is correct in that your writing skills will grow and those will be reflected in the other classes you are taking.

I too am confused about the 5 page summary paper you are talking about for your blog.

    Great start to the semester.

  4. Hello Jamie,
I think you are definetly right about this class being challenging. However I think this will make our reading writing and researching skills a lot better. At this point in time with all of the latest technology some of the younger generation has forgotten about writing a solid paper and instead chooses to use internet wording. This class is just a reminder of how we should be writing.

  5. I've been wondering the same thing to Jaime about whether this class is 3 credits because it sure seems like it’s a lot more! I too have been overwhelmed with all this amount of work that we have to do. After I read the syllabus and saw the assignments we had to do I thought that I might had made a mistake taken this course but when I went over the assignments more thoroughly, they aren't too bad. A lot of the assignments need a little bit of research but nothing over the top. I took a business writing course at UF and the papers we had to write in that class was much more difficult in that I had to write more and were more in depth research papers. I don't like writing either but it is a skill that we all need to have to make it in life because the skill of communicating whether its verbally or in writing can help you in your career or how to effective express your to people.

  6. Jamie I have to agree with you. This class is going to be challenging. I think it will be due to the fact that it is so time consuming. The work is not hard and a lot of it is our opinions and experiences. It is a demanding course and time management skills must be learned and put to use. I am looking forward to an interesting and educational semester. I also thought about dropping this course after I read the syllabus. I decided not to be so lazy and enjoy this learning experience!

  7. OK, I have to ask this question Jamie, what do you think of people , as a whole , who have contracted HIV? What is your honest opinion.
