Last weekend I saw the movie Philadephia. I've heard of the title before but heard nothing about the movie itself as I can recall. I knew it had something to do with AIDS given this class. I thought it was a great movie. My favorite part was when Andy was in the library and the librarian suggested that he do his research in a private room because of his AIDS and Joe was there and witnessed it. It was the most significant changing point for Joe in the movie. In part of the movie right before the party scene, there is an exterior shot of the building. The clip inside the window appeared to be vacant but yet the next scene there is a party going on. I wonder if anyone else caught that?
Thanksgiving was fun. I went to Columbia, SC to visit my moms side of the family and we had game night friday consisting of a game of Pokenno on my dads side.
I can't believe the semester is almost over!! I look back and realized I could have did things differently and much better. Even though this class has been a rough ride with me, I'm so glad I took it. I thought I knew almost everything about HIV/AIDS, but know I feel like I have more of an understanding on the subject!

Ok, this is going to sound completely crazy and I don't see how anyone can fully understand this but apparently there are some people that belives having sex with a virgin will cure HIV/AIDS! Yeah, I know. South Africa have an estimated 4.5 million people with HIV/AIDS and about 580,000 of new infections are from childeren under 15 years old. Why is this? It is of the notion that an intact hyman and a smaller vaginal secretions in young girls prevents transmission through sexual intercourse.

Mens Panel Week
This week I attended the mens open panel that took place on the main campus. We had 4 volunteer speakers that share with us many different aspects of living with HIV/AIDS. They spoke on how they found out about their condition, dealing with famiy members reactions, dealing with their sposes and how some of them took care of their spouses throughout, their medications and coctails, and personal health issues such as their reactions to some of the medicines and hospital stays. I found it to be very informative especially for people who has never knowingly encountered anyone with HIV/AIDS. The most important information I left with was the stress that they were were placing for us (the younger generation) to get out there and continue to spread information on HIV/AIDS. We now need to start with elementary school age to get them informed. I wish I would have went to the womens panel.

Invinsible?!
This week I've just been getting my paper ready to turn in. There are alot of proofreading and mistakes I need to fix. We had a good question of the week this week. They've been getting better and better. I feel that I'm thinking a little differently about the fact that HIV/AIDS is affecting people's lives,their community, and their country. This weeks question of the week pertained to how should the U.S continue the fight against AIDS. Clearly informing our community and classrooms isn't enough. The infection rate continues to rise! Why?!
I think most people know about HIV/AIDS but for some reason they don't think it pertains to them. Like they are invincible or something. How many times have you heard HIV/AIDS DON'T discriminate?! At this point, everyone should know someone who has died of AIDS or has HIV/AIDS. That isn't enought to scare you straight? Oh, I forgot, because they don't live like you or they don't have the lifestyle like you, that's why they have it. Get for real people! It's not until YOU find out that you have HIV/AIDS that you ended up knowing it's real. By that time, it's too late. Take a hint, everything about having the disease is not positive.

They were talking about how it is spread and how they try to prevent it and then they mentioned something that should have been quite obvious to me. They suggested "the local and reginal celebrities such as political leaders, movie stars, and beauty pageant winners, in the indiansubcontenent to get involved in helping people with HIV and educating the public, which would certainly raise awareness amung the rual public more quickly than current efforts." Duh! Who do most american follow, want to be like, and who they look up to? People we see everyday, people in entertaiment. If alot of intertainment people get involved in this, I truly feel it will make a huge difference!

M&M project week
Oh my goodness. I just want to start off saying that I have been swallowing about 10 plain and peanut M&M's for the past 3 days! It makes me depressed and it is very painfull. Have you tried to swallow half of a peanut m&m. Not fun. This assignment is for us to imitate how our daily life would be if we were HIV positive and had to take many different medications as many people already do.
I like experiences like these because I get to experience what it would be like to actually feel the effects of HIV/AIDS. I say that because infected people, if they choose, has to take these pills everyday a couple a times a day just to be or feel somewhat normal. I get to experience HIV/AIDS without really experiencing it. It's different because you mentally know people take medications for their condition but to actually take a placebo make it reality. This could be me. I determined that this would be painfull for me and was tired of it by day 2. I do NOT want to know how this would feel for the rest of my life.

There is a slim to none chance you can get infected with HIV/AIDS outside the human body. There has been laboratory studies on high concentrations of a laboratory grown virus. The CDC has shown that even the drying of these high concentrations of the virus reduced the infection rate by 90 to 99% in several hours. But be cautious because the amount in the study is not usually found in humans and there has been no case of anyone contacting it from environmental surfaces.

Week 8: Halloween Week!!!!!!
Happy Halloween! This week been working on a little extra credit and reading through my class slides. I'm trying to get prepared for this quiz I have on friday so I can do pretty good on it. The slides are on myths, transmission, and prevention of HIV/AIDS. Pretty interesting.

It is totally not safe to have unprotected sex with another HIV positive person if you are too! Some people actually think, "Oh, it's fine for two HIV positive people to engage in sex. They are both positive, so it's not like they can get anything worse!" WRONG! Accoding to my teach, Ms. Sharon Douglass, each person can have a different strand (yes, there are different strands of HIV) and transmitt it to the other partner. Then, one has to worry about new medication because the medication they are currently taking may not have any effect to the new strand. That is just waaaay too much to deal with. HIV/AIDS on Oprah
Ok, this week, I have alot I want to share with you guys. I watched Oprah today and guess what the topic was, spreading HIV through sex.
There was a man that new he was infected with HIV and had unprotected sex with over 25 women over the term of at least 13 years. The 5 women that were on the panel were older women with teenage childeren and some grandmothers. They all dated the same man and were intimate with him unprotectly.
The thing that got to me is most of the women asked him about his status or asked about using a condom, but no one thought of asking to see the papers or to say no sex without a condom! Oprah asked should you really ask to see paper work on the status becuase that isn't really romantic. I practically yelled at the t.v "yes!" OMG! I know about trusting your partner and taking their word but when it comes to your personal health, you need facts and proof. So what it may not be "romatic" at the time but romance can be brought back. You want to have health issues for the rest of your life all for some nice sex. Get for real. Tell your partner to take the confidential HIV test. It has their name on it.

AIDS is a home for oportunistic disease. Oportunistic diseases are diseases that usually only occur when they see a weak immune system. Having any or a combination of these sometimes rare disease can be a definite red flag. Some of these disease are:
-Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia
-Mycobacterium avium complex
-Cytomegalovirus
-Tuberculosis
-Cryptosporidiosis
-Hepatitis C
-Human papilloma virus

Week 6: HIV confidentiaity in Jamaica
Let me start off saying that I felt a boost of confidence this week. I didn't here anything special. I didn't see anything special. I just felt that things can get better in this class. It's not over and it's not too late. I just have to bust my butt for the next 6 weeks for this to become an success.

Week 5 of Blogging
How am I doing in the class? Terrible. Everything is worth hundreds of points and I've probably missed out of hundreds of points. Some of the work I try to do very well gets many points taken off. I proofread my papers, but I'm sorry I'm not the greatest writer. I can talk your ear off, but when it comes to my writting, I know my writting is bad. I know that and is constantly reminded of it. I don't have anyone here but me, so its up to me to find corrections without a second opionion.
I feel that I'm too far behind to catch up. Yea, there's bonus points and still time, but I've lost so many points doing it all will still give me an F. I'm extremely bored and don't know what to do.

Week 4
Well, I don't think I have really grown in the class. I truely believe I need to put myself more into the class. I keep saying I'm going to make my blogg better looking and get it looking all creative, but I have yet to make the time to do so. So getting caught up is my goal for next week. Week 2
Well, this is week 2 of our blogging for this class and i'm ok with it. I'm still getting the hang of this blogging and is pretty sure i'm not going as hard as I should but I'm still trying to get in the hang of things.
When it came to writting about a HIV topic I should write about in these series, I instantly knew what I wanted to speak on. I want to do HIV misconceptions. I know this probably won't last me 12 weeks but I have some ideas on how to make a spinoff that correlates back to my topic.
Did you know....
*You can NOT get HIV from kissing unless.......there is an open bleeding sore in your partners mouth. -makes you think twice about casual kissing people.
*You can NOT get HIV from eating off someones plate.- there is no bodily fluid contact-chill.
*You can NOT get HIV from hugging someone.-You won't hug someone with HIV but you're willing to have a make out session at a party over the weekend with "Josh what's his face" ?
*You can NOT get HIV from sitting in the saome seat as someone who is infected.-Now that's just small minded.
*You can NOT het HIV from shaking someone hand. -Even your grandparents should know that.
These are just a few facts I thought that should be stated at the begining. You would be surprised at how many think they can get infected by doing these. I will provide more information reguarding some of these and others.

The Peace Corps is a great organization that helps out with the HIV/AIDS cause. Peace Corps volunteers help people affected by HIV/AIDS through work in areas such as public health education, community and nongovernmental organizations, and business advising. Activities in public health include working in an orphanage with HIV-positive children, implementing programs for at-risk youth, collaborating with faith-based organizations on prevention messages, and providing nutrition and hygiene education classes in communities are just to name a few.

My first blog
OK, before I get started on this whole blogging thing, I just want to let you know that I'm nervous about this. I've never really cared much to share my thoughts about things that don't matter to me, let alone, share on the Internet. I'm pretty much a blunt person and it don't take much for me learn a lesson or get my point across. I value common sense. One thing I have noticed with people, though, is common sense isn't really that common. I feel that people are always trying to be seen and heard and I've been in enough group conferences and group meetings to know that everyone repeats each other. If you have new information to bring to the table, or can bring it in a different way, then maybe you can be a great blogger or column writer. I'm usually not impressed.
Like I said, I'm new to this. I've read a few bloggs here and there to prepare for this assignment but if anyone have any suggestions to help make me better or my blogging better, please don't hesitate to add in your two cents. :) Even though this will be a challenge for me to write all my thoughts, I don't want to just completely suck at this.
Well, this is week 1 of my blogging. In all my bloggs, I will be truthful and honest and hope I don't get punished for it. I will be myself. My teacher will sometimes give us topics to blogg about but this week is pretty much up to me to speak about the class thus far.
Is UCF sure this class is only 3 credits? After 4 years of college, I can concretely conclude that writing is NOT one of my favorite pastimes, and this class seem to possess all 4 years into 12 weeks. I have a 5 page assignment due every week, answer a question of the week and reply to others, blogg about my thoughts every week and also reply to 3 other bloggs, about 3 book reports to do, and another 5 page summary page for my bloggs is just to name a few. I didn't even hit on the modules and other extra credit assignments and projects. Whew. I've never been the one to back out of a educational challenge, even when I should have. ( I have the grades to prove it. Sad, but true.)
Anyway, this week to me will be and has been the hardest until I get into the routine of things. This class don't really seem too hard, it's just a lot to have on your mind at once. Well, I'm about done. I don't know how I did for my first blogg (I like spelling it like that. Is that points off?), but I have 11 more to improve on. Blogg at you later! :)
